Marie Helmore and Sherryl Polley Hats
HAD the 2002 drought not been so severe and the water needs of their cattle not have had to come first, former flower farmer Marie Helmore might never have become a milliner. Now living outside Kilkivan, Marie, and her husband moved from Anarkie about four years ago. In the country, people always wore hats, she said. If I go to town without a hat, I feel undressed and I never go outside to the garden or to the cattle without a hat. Marie said there was the raffia hat craze and then material hats and a few years ago we became fascinated with fascinators but she credits the excitement of the royal wedding that's really turned things around. Kate wears big, beautiful hats and at the wedding there were all those beautiful hats." Over the years Marie has attended many workshops with well-known milliners including Waltraud Reiner, Louise McDonald and Neil Grigg who designed the well-recognised pink hat worn by Gai Waterhouse a and one thing she has learned is that it's not just about making a hat. Marie has shared her knowlege with local identity Sherryl Polley who under Marie's tutorage is now producing much sought after Millinery masterpieces of her own. Sherryl and Marie's Hats can be seen on all the best dressed racing pages in rural Qld.
